1.Walter Sisulu Botanical Garden
The Walter Sisulu Botanical Garden is vast and stunning with an array of flora and fauna, a waterfall, educational walks and even a black eagle which nests atop the waterfall kraans. It is open weekdays and weekends and will sometimes have a show or celebration happening. They also have a mini-train that operates on weekends – great fun for the kids (and possibly the only operational mini-train in Gauteng).
2.Gnu Valley Farm is a catch-and-release fishing venue with braai facilities, picnic areas and an indoor and outdoor playground with a splash pool for children. They cater for kiddies parties, functions, events, adult parties, kitchen teas, baby showers and year-end functions, and as of January 2017 they will be hosting “little girl spa parties” as well.

3.Gillooly Farm is a firm favourite among local families and fishermen with wooden walkways encircling the lake, an abundance of bird species and plenty of picnic spots. Braais are available at the farm.

4. Bronkhorstspruit Found at the southern end of the dam, Bronkhorstspruit Dam Nature Reserve is known for its scenic views, angling opportunities and braai spots. Open 07:00 – 18:00 (summer) and 07:00 – 17:00 (winter).

5.Budmarsh Country Lodge (Magaliesberg)
At this elegant countryside venue – where guests can even drop in by helicopter – everything is arranged for you. You need only choose your picnic spot: on the lush lawns beneath shady trees, with a view of the Magaliesberg, or near the dam, where you can sit and watch birds swooping low over the water. Expect luxurious rugs and oversized pillows along with your wicker picnic basket, which you’ll find stuffed with homemade breads, quiches and tartlets, cold cuts, salads, sandwiches, wraps, scones with cream and jam, and a chocolate tart, as well as various cheeses and biscuits. An assistant will look after you, replenishing your drinks as necessary. (R450 per couple)
6.Rietvlei Farm – Between Alberton and Mulbarton
This is a great place if you are looking to get out with a family and enjoy a day filled with fun, sunshine, and picnicking. The whole family can enjoy an afternoon playing some putt-putt, visiting the animal farm, taking a ride on the steam train or tractor. Then, round off the day with a lovely family picnic or braai. Be sure to also check out the walking and bicycle trails while taking nature.
For a day out in the sun with family and friends, make your way to Pines Resort out in Krugersdorp for an afternoon of braaing and water slides! Relax and fire up some chops on the braai, find a great spot to have a picnic and keep cool with Pines Resort’s swimming pools and test out their water slides for some fun. There are braaing facilities available.
